The fall of Syria

Syria is slipping, bit by bit….

Syria, the pride of the Arab lands, the symbol of resistance, dignity. The land which may be impoverished, yet is a land true to its people, and wears that truth like a badge.

Yet today I witness the collapse of everything Syria used to represent. While others bask in glory, we turn into a land of hypocrisy, oppression, fear.

The biggest mistake is people think this is a revolution against “figures”. This is not about names, it makes no difference what interests people in power have in heart, it’s the system that is wrong. To be honest, if we rise up to the challenge and change the system, we most probably need the most patriotic and most capable of our leaders to take us through the troubles that will follow.

This is about power distribution, a way of thinking that believes it has a right to silence citizens, to make them disappear, to kill them in broad daylight. A system that infantilizes its people, censors them, thinks it knows what’s best, and assumes an utmost centralized competence in all situations, an illusion that the 15 children very visibly shattered.

But we are Syria, Syria the most free. Syria that refuses to kneel down. And when the Arab street calls for us, I know my brothers will answer that call. The Arab world needs us in this new challenge, now is not a time to back down. Now is a time to reshuffle and reform, to get our systems up to date, so we can be relevant once more.

Syria won’t fall into obscurity.
